In Dominica we asked our appointed
"Boat Boy", Andrew to give us a tour of the Indian River. This involves him
rowing his heavy pirogue through the mangrove swamps for 3 hours and is a great
opportunity for bird watching, on of John's favourite activities.
From Dominica we sailed to
Martinique, again on the wind but in double quick time. We cleared in at
Fort-de-France and provisioned with some French delicacies. The next day, we
sailed to Case Pilote, the home of Swedish engineer Frank Agren, the Volvo Penta
agent. Frank and his colleague Ludovic examined the engine installation prior to
the circumnavigation. The exhaust elbow and heat exchanger had problems but
these were soon resolved by the experts - albeit at a significant
cost!!
The sail to St Lucia is only 5
hours and we were tied up on the Rodney Bay dock by mid day. There was an
unexpected bonus when I cleared in - the Customs and Immigration staff were
unbelievably helpful and cheery - someone on high must has had
words!!!
This was John & Carole's first
visit to the Caribbean and the contrasts of the different islands have been a
great surprise to them. In Rodney Bay they were greeted by a modern marina at
bargain prices compared to the Med where Galatea is berthed. I was still on a
mission to acquire spares for the World ARC and had a measure of success at
Island Water World.
After this flying visit we sailed to
Marigot Bay to treat ourselves to our favourite restaurant, The Rain Forest
Hideaway. We had a great spot to anchor in the outer approach as the season is
drawing to a close and there are few yachts around. The economic downturn was
most in evidence at Discovery Resort which appeared to only have 2 guests!
This was also a chance to try out the new barbers kit on the sacrificial
skipper.
After Marigot we spent a night
between the Pitons, the most spectacular anchorage in the Caribbean before
setting off for a fast sail to Bequia. We have been here a couple of days,
anchored first off Princess Margaret beach then in the town roads. We have dived
with Beqia Dive Adventures and taken an Island Tour with Gideon where Chris
found a friendly lamb at the Turtle Sanctuary.
