Thursday Island - A Dump!!
Eowyn
Wed 18 Aug 2010 06:52
Éowyn is anchored
at Horn Island near Thursday Island in position 10:35.604S
142:14.549E
After Night Island, we spent
the first night in Portland Road, a very comfortable anchorage and the Margaret
Bay with similar qualities. These mangrove lined bays are home to the dangerous
fresh water crocodile so we did not venture ashore. The following night, we were
at the escape river after a great broad reach northwards. This anchorage was
full of fishing nets and pearl farm buoys so was a little difficult to find a
sheltered spot.
Yesterday we arrived at
Thursday Island (T.I.) The anchorage was awful, fully exposed to the strong
winds and most uncomfortable. We decided to move to the inconvenient but safe
Horn Island anchorage and today we took a ferry to T.I. Port Kennedy is a medium
sized town in a civilised country but amazingly there is no mobile phone network
and the only internet is at the library - hence no photos now. Food shopping is
quite good, but 50% more expensive than the mainland. All unconsumed fresh food
will be confiscated by quarantine at Darwin.
Generally, T.I. is a dump with
sad unmaintained buildings and poor facilities. A necessary evil to stop
here!
Tomorrow, the 19th , we set
sail for Darwin where Andrei joins us. The new alternator has arrived there and
fitting should be fairly simple>
