Deshais
Eowyn
Wed 11 Jan 2012 23:57
Éowyn is at anchor in
Deshais, Guadeloupe in position 16:18.429 N 61:47.876W
In a cruise dominated by
Chris's back injury and repairs to Eowyn, we went out to the start line at
Rodney Bay and cheered off the start of World ARC 2012. The line was not as
competitive as in 2010, most of the yachts cautiously holding back. Having lent
Paul Tetlow our fog horn, we awaited its return in the Committee boat, a Police
launch. Immediately we set sail to Martinique and in perfect sailing conditions,
averaged 7 knots to Petite Anse D'Arlet. the next day, we sailed to Case Pilote
so I could buy the new stern gland from the regional dealer for Volvo Penta. Our
overnight anchorage was at the attractive town of St Pierre, scene of a massive
volcano eruption at the beginning of the last century.
Because of stronger winds
forecast for Friday, we decided to reduce our passage time to Antigua by one
day. We therefore sailed to Prince Rupert Bay in Dominica for 1 night and then
to Deshais in the North of Guadeloupe. Unfortunately the winds for tomorrow mean
a 44 mile beat to Antigua but I will be relieved to get there to sort out the
boat work. The leaking stern gland has mysteriously mended itself but the
Iridium phone which we use for email and weather has packed up altogether now.
Fortunately we have been able to subscribe to an internet service onboard the
last 2 nights.
Once we get to Antigua we can
plan the repairs and our mid season lay-up. I hope also to collect my new (used)
Parasailor from dick & Irene Craig on
Tucanon.
