Mt Taranaki, the Tongariro crossing, the Wanganui canoeing and jumping backwards down waterfalls in the dark had all taken their toll on our joints, what better way to revive than the Hot pools at De Bretts campground in Taupo? The hot pools also had a fantastic water flume for very old children, possibly the best flumes in the world, even NZ. From Lake Taupo the next stop is Te Aroha, The town of love and the site of the the worlds (NZ) only soda geezer. This geezer geezes at about 40 minute intervals, so we sit patiently for 39 minutes, and then. … The words "predator free fence, wildlife sanctuary and rare species" set my pulse running so our next route has to take a detour to Maungatautari Ecolgical Island. Volunteers have erected a 47km (OINZ) predator fence around this large hill which intern is providing a safe environment for some of New Zealands most vulnerable plants, birds and insects.
