We just happened to arrive the day before the 'Wooden Boat Show' weekend, the biggest event of the year, and the biggest down pour of the year!
Mystic Seaport Museum is home to over 50 boats in various stages of restoration, a 19thc village and workshops covering all the trades required for traditional boat building.
The town spans both sides of the river and consists of an interesting assortment of old houses , shops and restaurants, including Mystic Pizza, where you can buy a 'slice of heaven' and the Julia Roberts DVD 'Mystic Pizza' both highly recommended!
We had several sociable encounters during our stay including David and Lynn of Moonbeam who we had last seen in La Gomera, in the Canaries!
I wish my children had been born somewhere along the Mystic River, it is a place of peace, beauty, history and harmony. We find ourselves looking through the property lists. . . . .when we finally exchange our ocean cruiser for a day sailer this could be the perfect place. there is also the promise of eternal youth, as demonstrated by Sandy and Sydney Van Zandt, circumnavigators and long term residents of neighboring Noank.
Sandy met us at the museum and transformed our time in Mystic into a social and informational whirlwind. Great friends of the gliding legend George Moffat, they obviously have a lot in common.
We have had a truly memorable time in Magical Mystic!!
