Porto Pollo, west coast Corsica. 5th - 6th August, 2015.
Hi all,
At 08.30 hrs on 5th august 2015, we lifted our anchor from the bay at Murtoli to motor north along the coast of Corsica. The predominant wind direction here is a NW and there is no point trying to motor into the daily head wind. An early start beats the breeze and so we motored to Campomoro for a ‘flyby’. The signalling fort stands proudly on the hillside, these forts are an interesting spectacle seen along the coasts of both Corsica and Sardinia. Historically both islands in the middle Med were constantly invaded and so an intelligent ‘alarm system’, a method of signalling with fires burnt on the forts and situated on prominent headlands, in sight of one another along the stretches of the coasts….signalled the arrival of threatening ships and pirates….simple but brilliant.
Finally we took a buoy in Porto Pollo, Corsica for the night. The next morning we slipped at 07.40 hrs in the early light. The back drop of the mountains, layered into the distance reminded me of the Chinese shadow puppet theatres. Each mountain ridge had a jagged edge resembling torn paper and layered in the mist like the Chinese paintings of Guilin…..magic.
