At 03.40 on 14th September we motored into the bay of S. Elia near
Cagliari, Sardinia. We were too early to go into the marina so we dropped
anchor in 10 metres of calm water near the beach. We were all quite tired
after the 39 hour, 187 nautical mile trip and were quickly off to bed.
Later that morning we woke to the view of clear sparkling water, a long
sandy beach and the large headland--- we think known as the ‘Devils saddle’ due
to it’s saddle-like shape.
So at 09.15 we lifted anchor and motored the short distance to the marina
in Cagliari. It is almost a year--- in a few days time—since we were there
en route to Malta.
The city is a lovely mix of busy daily life, residential, commercial,
shops, restaurants combined with a lovely old town --( see blog Cagliari
Sept./Oct. 2010 for more info).
On a more important note we sampled the Sardinian gelateria ice-cream
----mmmh!!
Jackie and John really enjoyed the atmosphere of the city and we had a nice
spot in the marina only a short distance from all the city atmosphere.
After two nights we slipped our lines to head west again and sailed along
the south west coast of the Golfo di Cagliari. We saw several splendid
white beaches, a Punic ancient amphitheatre and signalling towers stretching
along the coast.
Its an island to return to.............
