Varkho again, Greek Mainland. 10th-11th July.
We lifted anchor from Ligia, Island of Levkas at 11.00hrs. on the 9th July to head north through the Levkas canal to refuel at the marina. We headed south again through the canal and east to anchor in Varkho bay. We had a lovely afternoon and evening bbq catching up with our friends Debs and Pete who have just returned from a sailing trip through the Gulf of Corinth to the Aegean and back. The wind increased during the evening and strong gusts were accelerating off the high mountains like a switch on and off. We sleep happily with an anchor alarm but had both been up several times checking other boats around us. The bay is pretty, but the holding is poor in sand and weed. We set a high wind alarm too if we feel we need to watch for anyone else dragging. At 2 am in the darkness, Tony was checking once more when he saw a 60ft heavy wooden barge yacht slowly dragging across the bay towards us. I popped up and confirmed the boat was indeed much closer. Tony used a flash light on and off the boat checking its movement and was about to jump in the dinghy to knock on the fast approaching hull to wake someone…… then a light went on… two people on deck……. thankfully knew what they were doing….. started the engine and moved away from us, collecting their anchor back across the bay. They re-set well away from everyone and when we saw they were safely sorted we finally went back to bed. The next morning was beautifully calm we enjoyed some more time with our friends before lifting anchor to motor south in light winds to Rouda bay/ Mikros Gialos on the south coast of the Island of Levkas.
