Mdina is the historic capital of Malta and is known as the âsilent cityâ due to its calm, elegant quality. It sits in a central position on a hill side overlooking flat plains running to the coast. The views from the fortress walls are spectacular and overlook Ta Qali and onto the Three Cities, Valletta, Sliema and St Julians in the distance.
Historically a fortified citadel, today a beautiful example of medieval architecture. Narrow streets which turn at the length of the flight of an arrow---historically making them defendable---adds mystery to the atmosphere of the city, particularly at night.
The streets open up into a small square where the Cathedral is situated. It is well worth a visit and the photographs below only give a whisper of its beauty and elegance.

Architecturally it is stunning, it is quite simply a gem and our favourite on the island.   It did make us wonder what Valletta would have been like before the second world war bombings ?
