Hi all,

The city of Algherro is situated on the NW coast of Sardinia. It's citadel and historic fortifications are testament to the centuries of potential threat and invasions from the sea. Beneath the citadel and elevated old town is the marina and large harbour area.
Sardinia is a large island and so we decided to visit the town by car , still a two hour drive but quicker than the today sail around the coast.

The old town has a lovely flavour, small streets, alleyways, piazzas, shops and restaurants. The substantial fortification walls are wide and high with towers interspersed.

The city is strongly influenced by Spanish culture due to its past occupation. The Algherro dialect is very similar to Catalan. In fact some street names are written in Italian and Catalan and in the piazzas the voices sound Spanish.
For me this was one of the main reasons for visiting. I wanted to see the Spanish influenced architecture, get a "feel" of the historic city and listen to the dialect.

In fact during our stay in Sardinia this summer, I have found that I can understand quite a bit of what has been said to me in "Sardinian Italian". In fact, when in doubt I've spoken my pigeon Spanish and generally been understood.
When I have spoken to someone from mainland Italy I have noticed a significant difference.

I will end by saying .....enjoy the photographs of this city and put it on your ' to visit' list if you ever get to Sardinia.....it's worth seeing.

Photos of......
The old town, fortifications, looking out across the harbour etc.

Love to all
