The bus system of transport in Malta is very good and frequent. However, just about everyone wanted to go to the capital to see in the New Year. We waited with many people at the bus stop, thinking we would be in for a long wait.

Suddenly an old ford minibus pulled up about 30 yards away and several people including an elderly couple got into it---we thought--- off to a private function somewhere ? Next minute the old guy got back out and beckoned to us calling in Maltese. To us we thought ??  So we thought ‘when in Rome’ or Malta you might say and off we ran to it and jumped in--- ushered to the back seats.

We looked at one another thinking, ‘ oh well, where the hell are we off to?’ The friendly mix of Maltese and Italians chatting away. The minibus fortunately seemed to be heading for Valletta, the old 15 seater minibus must have lost its suspension springs some years ago--- and on the back seat we felt all of the many pot holes on the roads.

15 minutes later, still alive from the ride and not kidnapped we paid our 1.50 euro each and thanked a kind lady Maltese driver and ventured out into Valletta--- a few laughs and giggles later.

The capital was alive with people, mainly families, all ages and the atmosphere was fab.  The Maltese people were extremely well dressed and elegant.  The main square had a band playing in it, the cafes and bars alive and many people drinking their own bottles of alcohol--- and yet no one was drunk and no bad behaviour.

A great evening had by all, and people wishing everyone Happy New Year, including strangers.

Happy New Year to our families and friends---- we hope you all had a lovely time.
