The Thindra boys lifted anchor on the morning of the 13th
and sailed away into to the distance migrating west again. And so starts
the beginning of the voyage back to Portugal, the Canary Islands and
in November the ARC across the Atlantic to St Lucia. Some of the infamous
Thindra boys will join Lars for a second ARC--- having had so-o-o- much fun
the first time--- but can skipper Lars keep up the pace ???
A little piece of us left with the boys as they headed
west past Ibiza and disappeared--- our thoughts turned to the Caribbean
and to the desire to to it again in the future.
We lifted our anchor at 10.30am and sailed in light winds
before finally motoring the last few miles to Ibiza town. We dropped anchor
under the shelter of the Castle fortress -- high above us. Later we managed to
get in a marina for one night--- very expensive , but it allowed us to
explore ashore without worrying about the boat dragging on anchor in the
heavy ferry wash of the harbour bay.
We took a lovely old ferry boat across the bay from the
marina to the town around 5.30pm, the light was just great and for the next 3
hours we explored the castle and streets of the old town.
Tony and Ian have never visited Ibiza before. I had
been on holiday in Ibiza a surprising 29 years before. Although Ibiza town had
some quality then, it was also early 80's and the club 18-30 scene was at its
peak and some of the town felt a little tacky.
The Ibiza town of today ( in early sept ) , has
a charm and arty quality about it--- especially the old town within the fortress
walls where we found sophisticated shops, some with exquisite old/new interiors
containing quality artifacts, clothes, jewelley, arty candles, local
designed textiles etc---- actually heaven for me as it was a visual feast.
Tony, Ian and myself had a lovely few hours exploring all
the narrow streets and walkways inside the fortress wall, taking photographs of
the ochre stone buildings, illuminous in the falling low sunlight of late
evening, old doorways and the cobbles shining through years of tourist
footsteps.
The restaurants in the fortress were also beautifully
presented but a little expensive so we looked, enjoyed but found a local Italian
restaurant back near the seashore.
September is obviously a good time to enjoy the town with
less tourists, open streets and plenty of space to enjoy the shops and
restaurants
We caught a late ferry back to the marina for a calm
night.
Today 14th sept we are heading off along the coast to find
another bay.
