At 14.00 hrs on 1st June we slipped our lines from Preveza to motor across the Gulf of Amvrakia which is an inland sea within the mainland approx. 18 nautical miles wide east to west and 5 nautical miles north to south at its narrowest. The depths have shallows down to 5 m and quite deep areas of 30m plus. The area is supposed to be a playground for dolphins feeding on the good fish stocks but sadly we didn't see any.
We headed to the south shore to a small fishing village called Vonitsa. Here a newish mole has extended an old harbour creating a protected area against the predominant wind and swell.
Above the simple town and small harbour is a large Venetian fort partly hidden in the surrounding trees. We tried to visit inside but it was closed.
On the west side of the bay is an interesting spit of land jutting out into the sea leading to a small church on the islet. The causeway has an ornate 'Chinese' quality to it with low level arches and ballastrades not unlike ones we have seen in the Summer palace lake in Beijing.
We had a calm overnight stay and left early as thunderstorms were forecast. We sailed on genoa in 13 knots wind. As we neared Preveza the light rain turned to thunderstorms with lightening and by the time we had dropped anchor and were stern to the dock we were saturated to the skin.
You see it rains in Greece too!!!!!!.... see photos.
