On the 19th August we headed south motoring pas the Gulf of Olbia and past the Island of Tavolara.

The island is just 3 miles long and 0.6 miles wide with impressive steep cliffs to the one end of 1,854 ft plummeting to a sandy spit at sea level at the other and an anchorage. As we passed by the clouds were rolling over the top of it and spilling eerily down to the sea.

The island has a curious history, it was once known as the smallest kingdom in the world, the 'Kingdom of Tavolara'.
In 1836, the King of Sardinia, King Charles visited the tiny island and acknowledged Giuseppe Bertoleni as the independent sovereign monarch.
It is reported that Queen Victoria sent a royal photographer to photograph the royal family of Tavolara
Subsequent family members held the kingdom until in 1934 Queen Mariangela died and the island was to be returned to Italy. Her nephew King Paolo 2nd still claimed the sovereignty and ruled until his death in 1962. At this time the island became a NATO station.

We sailed past the island and through a narrow channel before anchoring in the bay of Porto della Tavarna for a calm night.
