We slipped our lines from the quay of Adamas on the Island of Milos on 5th
July and motor sailed the 33 N miles to the tiny Island of Folegandros. As
we neared the island we could see Santorini for the first time in the
distance---the white Cycladic buildings on the crest of the cliffs looking like
a snow capped mountain.
We anchored in the bay of Karavostasi, a small village, few houses, rooms
for visitors, a shop and couple of taverna’s and the main tiny ferry port for
the island. The bay and village are sleepy and great until the frenetic activity
when the ferry arrives.
We spent one night at anchor and 2 nights on the quay. We visited the
stunning ‘Chora’ built 300m high on the edge of a cliff ,historically to protect
the villagers from the threat of pirates.
There is a small square, a few restaurants/ bars, rooms to stay, a couple
of stunning little hotels perched on the edge of the cliff and a great hairpin
walk up to the church at the highest point.
Folegandros is a little gem, a real find---- sleepy--- if has a real sense
of community, despite now having foreign visitors. It has a
history of different rulers through time and for being a ‘stop over’ for
pirates. The island only gained electricity in the mid 70’s.
Today it is just lovely, especially in the high chora village and with
dramatic views. The photographs speak for themselves. We are putting
it on our ‘have to return one day’ list.
