Carol, Pat, Alex and Imogen left on 4th August and we decided to stay in Samos for a couple of days to explore the island by scooter. In fact we stayed another nine days as the winds began to increase.

 

We had holidayed in Samos a few years before so we visited the small village port of Kokkari, Samos town and some inland villages, ( photos below ).

The harbour of Pythagorion is named after the philosopher Pythagoras who was born there in 580BC.  ( See photo of the Pythagoras statue and triangle on the quay side ).

 

On 6th August Pythagorion had a festival celebrating a victory over invading Turks, we think in 1824. The town transformed into an arena for partying and traditional Greek dancing in the streets and old harbour.  ( see photos of dancers).

 

The Meltemi wind gradually increased over the days from the 4th, culminating in 46 knots true gusts across the decks of Tioram safely tied to the quay.

On 13th August we slipped our lines and headed south again to the Island of Lipsi.
