Maria and Pepe, our Spanish friends, kindly invited us to their country
house on 27th November to enjoy the fiesta.
Unlike English BBQ’s where we cook everything quickly at best and flambé
and burn it at worst------ the Argentinians make a BBQ fire, remove the wood to
one side and then gather together the small glowing embers. The lightly spiced,
raw meat is then placed high above the embers for two to three hours, so that
the meat cooks slowly and delicately--- gaining a succulent smoked
flavour.
In England we fiddle around with small sausages and hamburgers on BBQ’s,
but not the Argentinians--- they come from the land of ‘beef’---- and so huge
ribs of beef are cooked and we are told at Christmas,-- half cows !!
![]() Amorina’s father, Adam and her husband Andres slaved over the two and half
hour cooking process whilst the ladies prepared traditional dishes of potatoes
with eggs, salads and desserts.
With Maria and Pepe’s family and friends there were 14 of us------- and
huge cheers went out each time the chefs arrived from the BBQ with more huge
ribs of beef, portions of pork and chicken. The laughter was
increased by Sangria, cervezas and Champagne.
The atmosphere was lovely---- different people, Spanish, Argentinian and
English together, laughing, eating, drinking---- trying to communicate in
‘Spang-lish’------- and cries of ‘ the food is wonderful, but no more
please!!!!!!!’---- as another round of ribs arrived and we thought we might all
explode !!
