The port and town of Sami, Cephalonia.

We sailed from Zakinthos in 22 knots and a lumpy sea until we reached the lee (shelter) of the island of Cephalonia. The wind died and so we motored the last few miles arriving after a five hour journey.  After doing a fair amount of long sea voyages it is a pleasure to be leaving one island when we can see another.

We moored onto the harbour wall by the ferry dock in Sami. The ferries are a fantastic inter-island link for travellers, for food, fuel, equipment and especially for the smaller islands without airports,  it is simply the lifeline.
In Sami the ferry arrives each day,  two port guys arrive to take the lines, the ferry ramp is lowered and people drive off---all before the mooring lines get tied !! Picture scooters, cars, lorries racing off the boat and along the quay like the start of the âwhacky racesâ.

We came on holiday to Cephalonia ten years ago. Sami is still unchanged, a lovely town nestling in a valley between incredibly lush green mountains. The calm sea creates a picture not unlike a Swiss or Italian lake with the low lying town on the shoreline.
Cephalonia is always green, but at the moment it is spectacular, particularly in the interior with green fields, beautiful wild flowers and scents----- and few touristsâa good time to come if you can.
The weather is uncharacteristically still mixed, the local people say that usually the âsun switchâ goes on , on 1st May. We have had hot sun, misty drizzle over the mountains and thunderstorms.
We hired a Scooter from a really nice local gentleman--- 125cc--- saves one of us getting off to go up hills !!!----and explored some of our old haunts on the island.
We visited Trapezaki, Argostoli ( the capital ), the stunning Myrtos Beach, Assos, Ayos Eufimia before returning to Sami.

We had a mixture of sun, mist and got soaked to the skin in a torrential thunderstorm.
