Port Polis is a bay on the west side of Ithaka in the channel between Ithaka and Kefalonia. It is a simple bay, a nice anchorage off the beach or good stern to the rocks.
There are numerous fish here in the clear deep water, great for snorkelling.
We walked for 20 mins up the very steep road which led us to the village of Port Polis, simple, pretty and traditional. The accents of people in the village are often ‘Aussy’ Austrailians as many of the Greeks of Ithaka emigrated in the late 20th century now returning to their roots. Most locals greet you with, ‘Godey’.
We spoke to a guy, 28 who was born on Ithaka, then emigrated to Australia with his family as a child and had returned to stay. He said he was in fact the last person to be born on Ithaka and that since that time women go to off the island to Patras well before due dates to have their babies in the hospital.
