Our motorbike trip around Kefalonia took us past several remnants of what would have been wonderful Venetian houses.

A series of earthquakes over centuries have changed the face of this Island, none more so than the major quake of 1953 which demolished every town on Kefalonia except Fiskardo. The island would have been a stunning destination….. like Symi near Rhodes or Hydra near Athens….. which have and still flourish with the rich and famous.

The photographs below are of houses in more remote villages,  literally shattered houses, not crumbling or demolished but still as they were after the quake……….. fractured like an egg.

Presumably the houses in more desirable areas were either saved, refurbished or demolished. We haven’t seen many and so assume, sadly most were demolished. Tony says the fractures are generally beyond restoration.

We passed by a small church obviously destroyed by the quake. Its centuries old tiled roof fallen in, but the frescoes still surviving. The tiny alter still used, with candles etc laid clumsily to one side.
