The Levkas Canal is man- made and therefore makes Levkas an Island. The
marsh land is very shallow and is ideal as an area to dredge and maintain a
channel which creates a good short cut for boats travelling North or South
rather than the longer passage around the west coast.
Surprisingly it was originally dredged by the Corinthians around the 7th
century BC---- and continued by the Romanâs during their occupation-----
incredible isnât it what the ancient cultures achieved.
The current canal was built in the early 1900âs and is dredged to 6
metres. It is narrow but fine for yachts to pass one another, but is poorly
marked by poles on either side, some bent, some with tops missing and others
with garden solar lamps fixed to them !!
Sadly the canal is not the pretty place it could be, lots of blown or
discarded plastic etc litters the shoreline.
The floating bridge at the North end of the canal can lift itâs ends for
small boat traffic but rotates out of the way for yachts. It is simple and
clever and quick.
We continued our journey North to Preveza on the Greek mainland, anchoring
for the night in a safe, calm bay but very industrial area and not pretty.
Next stop the Islands of Paxos and Anti Paxos approx. 30 n miles North West
of Preveza and just South of Corfu.
Love to all
