At 06.48 hrs. we slipped our lines from Argostoli to head north up the west coast of Kefalonia

We motored in a light forecast around the south tip of Kefalonia before heading north along the dramatic west coastline… weathered and shaped by time and the North West winds.

After approx. 28 n miles we motored into the spectacular bay with several beaches including the wonderful Myrtos beach.  It is the iconic photo opportunity in the Ionian.  The steep cliffs here are made of a chalky material and the beach has wonderful white pebbles creating the turquoise colour of the sea.

We have seen this beach many times from the shore and once after a storm when the sea turned to a milky white, the translucent water becoming opaque emphasising the intensity of the turquoise colour.

We anchored in calm conditions in a transparent sea of nearly 11m…30 odd feet and I saw the anchor hit the bottom on the sandy seabed, wonderful, just like the Caribbean. The actual bay is less impressive from the sea…. Its beauty is from the high elevated cliffs above which dwarf the sunbathers on the beach to simple black dots.

We swam for a while, snorkelling and were surprised to see that the sea bed was pure sand, no pebbles like on shore.

We took some photos, see below, lifted anchor and headed north to Assos. Again, we have only visited Assos by scooter. It is a beautiful small village built on a peninsular spit between Kefalonia and almost an island. The ‘island’ is topped with a striking Venetian fort and from the sea the fortifications are impressive, surrounding and containing the historic fortress. We motored in and out, not stopping as whilst Assos is a natural harbour it offers little protection for an overnight stay for a visiting yacht…..very shallow in the inner bay and open to the predominant winds.

We continued north picking up the afternoon breeze and got a great sail between the north tip of Kefalonia and the south of Levkas getting a beam reach from the NW wind.

We anchored in Vlikho ‘pond’, Island of Levkas at 18.00 hrs.  and approx. 50 n miles.
