Portoferraio. 15th-16th August 2015.
Hi all, On 15th August we lifted anchor from Lacona bay and motored the 24 n miles to Portoferraio and into the marina. The large bay is an excellent area to anchor in shallow water. The large carries comes and go but they go straight into the town and so this leaves the whole gulf to explore and anchor. The Genoese fort and fortifications surround the old town and from the sea it looks picture postcard. Ashore we explored the old square, alleyways and sets of steps leading steeply up the hill to the citadel. On the evening there was a great atmosphere ashore as the town was holding a festival. In one square a stage was set up and the ‘Beetles’ appeared, well….an excellent tribute band lookalikes. The singers wearing mullet hairstyle wigs and the Beetles style suits looked strikingly like the real thing. Tony and I found this amusing as between songs, the Italian lead singers ‘Paul Mccartney’ and ‘John Lenon’ chatted to the large crowd in fluent Italian... of course, before breaking back into….’She loves you yeah, yeah, yeahhhhhhh with a Liverpool twang..... At the end of the evening there was an amazing firework display over the citadel and surrounding Genoese harbour....magic. Luckily the evening festival was over as a short time after the fireworks ended a terrific squall thunderstorm with heavy rain bouncing on the streets hit the Island. We for back to the marina a 30 min walk soaked to the skin. Despite this the evening had been wonderful and not affected by the storm Photos of Portoferraio, the Citadel town, harbour, (Beetle tribute and fireworks in following post) Love to all T and T xxx |
