We lifted anchor from Cala Estanyol , Ibiza at 08.15 and motored in light
winds the 15 N miles to Formentera.
It is always frustrating to be motoring in a yacht, but in the high
pressure system, with flat calm water, lovely sunshine and great views to our
stern of the fort and old town of Ibiza town and the low level island of
Formentera ahead of us, we were happy.
We anchored at 12.00 off the beaches running from Formentera into the Isla
Espalmador. The landscape appears to be one but in fact a small
break in the land mass creates a shallow beach covered by water which separates
the two islands. You can often see holidaymakers walking across the gap in
swimming costumes, with calm water up to their waists.
Today the sea is pushing through with wind creating small waves.
The water off the beach here is as clear as anywhere we saw in the
Caribbean. Despite being late season there are many yachts large and small
anchored in this beautiful place.
The area is a protected reserve which has prevented any
development/building on the shore and so the white stretch of sand and dunes are
still natural with only a couple of simple beach bars.
We took the dinghy to the shore and had a drink in the bar looking back at
Tioram sitting happily at anchor in the bay. We swam off the beach
and took photographs (below) of the crystal clear water and friendly
fish—without teeth !!!--- unlike the Caribbean !!
It is a lovely place, with spectacular views and sunset, especially from a
boat at anchor.
