We lifted anchor at 13.32 hrs from Cabo San Vito bay
to head east along the North coast of Sicily towards Palermo. When you sail
along the coast of this island you realise just how big it is.
In 22 knots T wind from NW we sailed running along at 7
knots plus over the ground---Tioram going like a train, but with a rolly cross
sea. After a few hours we gybed back toards the coast and finally motored in a
straight line into Mondello bay.
We anchored after 38 n miles at 19.20. The bay
is close to Palermo and only seperated from the city by a
Cabo, the huge mountain of Carini.
The bay is fringed with lush vegetation amongst villas and
grand houses.
A Lido building sits in the centre of the bay, fronted by
a buoyed area for swimmers. It appears to be of a 1930's design,
the symmetrical building has rows of doors, presumably changing rooms for the
modest 1930's public. The well maintained building has a central castellated
facade with a two tier balcony now used as a function / restaurant
area. We could see people elegantly dressed on the balconies as the sun
set.
Very nice anchorage and calm overnight in calm weather
conditions.
Love to all
