Saline Bay
Mayreau Island, Grenadines.
14-15th Jan.
Hi everyone,
We anchored in Saline bay on the evening of 14th
Jan.
The next morning we left the boat anchored in the bay and
took the dinghy ashore. We climbed a steep hill from the lovely beach into
Mayreau town, in search of breakfast.
The town is very small, perhaps 30 houses and a guest
house called Dennis's Hideaway.
We had a great breakfast cooked by Dennis himself looking
down into the bay and Tioram safely anchored. He is an interesting character and
we chatted about things.
We walked further up the hill to a bar/cafe owned by
Robert 'Righteous' Lewis, a well known Rastafarian, he has created
the most colourful and interesting building. ( See photos)
There is another Rastafarian guy who blasts out reggae
music over the village--- apparently dawn till dusk------- in fact we heard it
from the boat in the bay !!
We continued to the top of the hill and found a lovely
Catholic church, perched high over looking Mayreau but with spectacular views of
the Tobago Cays we had left the day before.
We wondered into and adjacent graveyard, the entrance
marked only by a 3 piece wooden arch and a path the width of a small lane lined
with conch shells on the burnt grass. The graveyard laid on a hill which slowly
grades away with an amazing view of the sea.
The first stone we came to was for a Margaret Alexander,
who died in 1950, aged 113 years and amongst the others further on we came to
another lady 103 years.
When you look around such a simple place, a few houses,
small school, a church, spectacular views-----------and a 'loud '
Rastafarian---- it's not hard to see that the simple, tranquil life and ultra
fresh sea food diet is worth a lot and a million miles from the hectic lives we
all lead.
We enjoyed our walk and dinghy back to the boat, raised
anchor and set sail for Petite St Vincent/ Petite St
Martinique.
