We slipped our lines from the quay at Kioni and sailed the 13 n miles to Kalamos.
The wind had changed from the predominant N/W to an easterly giving us a great beam reach in 8-12 knots true wind sailing straight to Kalamos only putting on the motor in the temporary lee of the island of Atokos.

The temperature on the shaded deck thermometer, a balmy 29.5C at 11.30 am on the 2nd Oct----magic.
The depths between the islands showing between 200 and 300 metres, amazing considering the English channel is only between 30 and 50 m.

The narrow channel between the islands of Kalamos and Kastos is interesting to sail. Heading north east Kalamos sits to port/left with its high tree covered mountain range and its picturesque windmills, now disused scattered along the coast.  To the right the island of Kastos is the opposite of its sister island---- flat plains and smaller.

We moored in the small harbour where all mooring is overseen by a local gentleman called George.   He was born on the island and owns the taverna on the harbour side. He has taken peoples warps (ropes) for 25 years on the basis that the visitors will eat in his taverna.  For travellers, boat owners and skilled charterers this is helpful, but for the first timers and the uninitiated-------it is essential.

Yachts arrive in the harbour of all shapes and sizes and of many different nationalities.  The games and the theatre begins as boats try to drop anchor and moor stern to the dock.
George directs with hand signals and occasionally shouting, turn left, turn right, go out further, now drop your anchor----- no now now, reverse back captain, throw the rope to me, stop the boat captain, forward, up anchor, down anchor .......... and so the dance goes on until he has the boats moored.   At that point the relieved skippers and crew are so pleased not to have lost their deposits hitting something that they are all too happy to eat at Georges taverna. Entrepreneurial business sense for 25 years------brilliant.
