Palos (Nisiros)

Nisiros is another little known gem.  It contains an active volcano which you can walk around in – complete with hissing vents of steam surrounded by perfect sulphur crystals. 

 

We’ve been told we don’t show enough cute photos of the villages we’ve seen, so here’s a taster…

 

One of its gems is a fortress dating back to the Hellenistic period (so, 2,500 yrs old).  Untouched by both the Romans and locals looking for cheap building materials, this huge collection of “cyclopean” walls (ie made of stones at one time thought to be too large to be moved by man, it must have been the Cyclopes = giants) has been only lightly restored and looks very impressive.
