Our first stop in Portugal in the Minho region and an instant change of feel, architecture and time (as Portugal is in the same time zone as GB). We had to motorsail all day in light southerly winds (and a biggish swell) to get here, but Viano do Castelo is a lovely old town full of 16th and 17th century houses, many with tiles all over their frontages. Apparently the town made its money from cod caught off the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, which was quite some long distance fishing especially in the days of sail! We enjoyed some very good local wine in a café in the town’s main square which bodes well for the rest of our stay in Portugal.
