Early morning run out onto the coastline from Parrsboro, past high mansions
and abundant flowers, before taking the back road (Bear Road) to Joggins.
Unfortunately, no bears to be seen!
The Joggins Fossil Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is built on top of a
former 250 year-old coal mine. Cliffs 15km of 30ms high have eroded to
reveal over 200 fossilized species from a time 300 million years ago - the
Carboniferous era. When these latitudes were home to steamy swamps and
forests. Charles Darwin described Joggins in his book "On the Origins of
Species" as a world treasure. The tides and waves of the bay of Fundy reveal
new fossils almost daily as the cliffs erode rapidly. Fossilised tree
trunks. Roots and root hairs are evident in the cliff faces alongside the
coal seems which were mined and the iron rich water seeping from the old
mines.
Miles of beach line are exposed as the Bay of Fundy tide recedes, leaving
fishing boats high and dry at every harbour wall. Another off-road drive to
cape D'Or lighthouse, more spectacular cliffs and a perfect spot for a
picnic lunch.
Finally, southward to Wolfville and an overnight stay at an 1874 former
farmhouse - the Tattingstone Inn - Toad Hall carriage house cottage! The
town, which used to be known as "Mud Village" changed its name on petition
by the influential Wolfe family - no associations with wolves! Now it is
home to a thriving university.
