An early rise before the sun to slip away from the Hall of Fame marina and catch the 07:00 a.m. 17th Street Bridge opening. Motoring along the silent waterways lit by the decor of the mansions alongside. Even a "square-rigger" nestles amongst the super-yachts. Once again out into the open sea, joining other tankers and cargo vessels leaving the busy Port Everglades as the sun stretches above the horizon. Set sail and motor to cover the 70+nm in daylight to a safe anchorage within the Florida Keys.

As the hot day ticked by we searched for shade under the helmsman's bimini - unlike some brave kayakers far out from the shore. At last the Miami high-rise shoreline slipped by, the Florida Keys reef marker came into view and we took the decision to transit the Keys in the Hawk Channel (inside the reef and close to the many islands of the Keys. A favourable south-easterly aided our route along the shallow water channel. And a very pleasant, relaxing route - no waves, a few depth issues otherwise a great way to transit the Keys. Rodriguez Key adjacent to Key Largo was our anchorage for the night - all set as the sun dipped below the horizon - the end of a long day.
