I visit Ross Island from where the British ruled India for many years.  Known as the Paris of the East they have every comfort.  A top class bakery, swimming pools, a desalination plant, tennis courts, croquet lawns.  When the Japanese took over during the second world war the locals breathed a sigh of relief.  But not for long.  They were out of the frying pan and into the fire…
