I left Moorea (the most beautiful anchorage I have ever been in) on a Saturday and had a very windy (30 knots plus) overnight sail  to Huahine where I got a good anchoring spot.  A fast passage especially as Wild Fox had her bottom cleaned when I hauled out.  Huahine is a lovely island with double helpful people and dancing girls outside the supermarket on a Wednesday morning!  The island is very historic where tourism is less developed and so prices are lower and the people are more relaxed.
I have photographed very few canoes.  Somehow the magic is spoiled when they are carbon fibre re-inforced plastic and plastered with sponsorship stickers!  Canoe racing here is big business.  But I did get some ‘photos of amateurs.
A junk rigged catamaran approached the reef pass.  I first met this boat three years ago in Brazil but it is now in different ownership.  Just look at the ‘photo – catamaran, centre with waves breaking over the reef; right centre, a surfer awaits the perfect moment; foreground, a spinner dolphin leaps clear of the water for a look about.
The usual island tour by hire car, happy hour at a local pub.  Snorkeling, swimming, cycling.  All the usual stressful stuff.  Close by are a number of yacht charter companies and so for the first time since the Caribbean we have to be on the look-out for bad sailors.  A friend timed a record for a boat from the Moorings fleet – from start of anchor drop to the entire crew going ashore in the dinghy – 58 seconds!  Now that is a boat to anchor well away from…
The next island (actually two islands within one reef) is Raiatea and Taha’a.  It is only 20 miles away but I need to get there and get securely anchored as there is some weather coming in.
