Peaceful Savusavu

The anchorage here is so peaceful. Too peaceful, in fact, as there is never enough wind to run the generator to recharge the batteries. I go to a seminar run by an expat who has been here for years and pick up a lot of good information about places to go and not to go. He points out one reef pass and warns us never to try it. I went through it a week ago!

The whole town sits on a series of hot springs. Steam rises out of the beach at low tide and also out of the rivers. In and out of the yachts people who have nothing cheerfully paddle home made bamboo canoes to go fishing.

I take a local bus to the other side of the island. A fun trip with the locals over the back of the island through the rainforest. Outside of the towns there is virtually no traffic but as we approach Labasa we are held up by dozens of trailers carrying sugar cane. Seeing the men in the fields I am glad I do not have the job of harvesting it.

I will head out again in a few days, maybe...
