The Golden
Buddha is a short walk from my hotel and lives in a lovely house, even if it is
somewhat overrun by tourists. In times
of threaten invasions the five and a half tons of gold were covered in plaster
and painted gold to make it look valueless.
Off to
another site to see a reclining Buddha and he is having restoration work done
on his feet. Some of the statues posted
as guards are interesting to look at. It
is clear that no money was spared in an impoverished country.
The new
metro system and skytrain are wonderful and both are being extended. But road traffic is mostly at a
standstill. Taxis are fun. None of the drivers speak English and there
is no good showing them an address as they cannot read English script. You have to have everything written out in
Thai script to have any chance of going to where you want to go.
