Santiago, Cuba

With time against me I go the the eastern end of Cuba.  Circumnavigating is difficult as the authorities are murder.  My check in took over five hours and there are a very limited number of places where you are allowed to drop anchor.  Break the rules and go to jail - do not pass go.  The constant begging is a pain especially when white collar workers such as harbour office staff come looking for money but this was a country I just had to see before the Castros depart as some day they will.  The old cars are a wonder from the early 50s and some even from the 40s.  They have new and small engines (fuel is expensive here).  But there is no question of spare parts.  If it breaks you fix it.  If it can be made it can be fixed!  Of course it was in Cuba that Sapir (the horrible hitch hiker) came aboard.  Leaving in zero wind on a sea of glass she was sick 20 yards from the pier!
