Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere.  When people here say they have nothing they mean literally nothing.  25,000 people live on the island; there is not one single car.  I brought a bag of colouring pencils into the school.  The headmistress's eyes opened wide with delight - for her it was like Christmas.  There is no free schooling.  Children pay for the school on arrival each morning.  If daddy catches no fish today then no school tomorrow...
