Having decided not to use the US$1,750 diver we cleared all of the silly regulations and headed out to clean water to scrub the bottom of the boat. It was not as bad as expected and by 1200 I had done as much as I wanted to do and decided to head off. All cruisers know that it is bad luck to set off on passage on a Friday but as it was Good Friday I thought that we might get away with it. Soon it was raining hard and blowing hard.

After clearing the traffic Separation Zone at the south of Sri Lanka I set course for northern Sumatra. Of course this is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. Every ship coming from Asia heads around Singapore, north through the Straits of Malacca then west at northern Sumatra to Sri Lanka and Suez. About one ship every 10 minutes! I gradually work my way north where there will be fewer ships and then the wind dies. For three days we are only making 2.5 knots. And at least three more days of very light winds. And it is too far to motor anywhere. So much for the South West Monsoon. No wind and no rain. If we do not get some of each quite soon we will have to call into Paula We off the north of Sumatra for fuel and water.

Even in an emergency stop the paperwork in Indonesia is a nightmare…
