Naigani & Lefuka

I have a gentle little sail in flat water (this area is all within the barrier reef) for 17 odd miles up to Naigani Island. A great anchorage on hard sand and a reef to windward for protection. I see some people on the beach; it turns out to be three Australian tourists and a dive instructor. The dive instructor agrees to pick me up at 1700 and bring me to the other side of the island for a sundowner - too far in Wild Fox's little dinghy. He rips me off on the cost and I drop him in it by emailing all details to his boss when I am a safe distance away.

Talking of safe distances, on the way back out I manage to hit the reef. Cosmetic damage only but a bit of a silly thing to do. I head to Levuka the original capital of Fiji - just 12 miles away. It was the capital because it is the only island in Fiji with a reef pass which runs east west - with the SE trade winds the old sailing canoes could get in and out almost every day of the year. It is a small place now, very faded with a massive tuna canning plant. I have to pay the Port Captain the equivalent of one pound 20p for use of the secure dinghy dock. And this fee only lasts for 30 days. The expense of cruising.

I find another Swanston in the museum. It is the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1 and Unesco have asked all yachts to fly their ensigns at half mast. Off to Wakaya tomorrow. 10 miles...
