Passage to the Andamans

Well I knew there would be very little wind and the forecast was right. I tried to have an overnight stop at the Similan Islands but could not get anchored. Most boats motored for half the way here. But at least the sea was calm and the sunsets great. Once clear of the commercial fishing of Thailand and Myanmar keeping a lookout became easier. I arrived just after sunrise and had to sit patiently on the boat waiting for customs, immigration and the coastguard. It was an eleven hour process.
When complete I went ashore (the next day). The fruit and vegetable markets are great, the supermarkets poor – no proper coffee – instant only. Then we have a welcome ceremony with colourful dancing and a good dinner with free beer.
Then it is off to the first island..
