How quick was that? Five days and boom, 750 miles
done. In a few more hours, we'll have less than 2,980 miles to go.
This mileage holds much significance for us because we've
sailed it before - year 2008 in the Pacific: Galapagos to the Marquesas, 17
days and 2,980 miles. If we could do it then, certainly we
can tack it on to the 750 miles we've already sailed here in the Atlantic,
and sally forth with no trouble at all. This is exactly what we've
decided to do (not that we have any choice in the matter, but it makes us
feel better to think through the logic in this
way).
In other news, we are happy to report the start of the fishing
season (no results yet), the freezer is still freezing (hence the start of the
fishing season), and in our newly relaxed sailing state, crew productivity has
increased. The generator's oil was changed yesterday afternoon, and
shortly thereafter, more oatmeal cookies were baked (too bad the Aussie
catamaran is too far away for us to toss them some...real cookies I mean,
not....you know). Today, cornbread is planned. Before you know it,
we'll be doing laundry and waxing the cockpit. Well, maybe. We
wouldn't want to get too carried away with this stuff when there are so
many books to be read instead.
Oh, and the sailing. Right. It's become an
afterthought, hasn't it? Here's a surprise: we're sailing directly
downwind at 5-7 knots in 10-16 knots of wind from the southeast (and expect
to be until we get a fair bit closer to the equator where the wind will
most likely go light and turn east).
750 miles and 5 days down, the equivalent of one giant Pacific
passage to go.
