On Wednesday (8/29) we sailed, yup sailed, from
Long Cove to Pemaquid. This is the first in a series of small 20-30 mile
hops we plan to take down the coast of Maine.
We stayed two nights in Pemaquid and used the extra
time at anchor in perfect weather to catch up on things like the laundry,
various Don boat jobs, a few more episodes of the Sopranos and lots of walking
to the nearest town (New Harbor) for supplies.
Below is another picture of a schooner. We saw
this one on the way to Pemaquid, and unlike the schooner that joined us in
Pulpit Harbor, this one is privately owned. The number of classic wooden
sailboats and schooners in pristine condition seen sailing around here is
incredible.
The second picture is the view we had from where we
were anchored. This is the William Henry Memorial Fort. The word
memorial is not so much for the benefit of William Henry's memory as
it is for that of the fort. It was originally built in 1613, but it was
destroyed 4 times over the years (pirates, Indians, French and
British) and finally rebuilt in 1908 as a reminder that it
existed. So who was William Henry? We have no
idea.
