Injury Update
Harmonie
Don and Anne Myers

The injured sailor/captain/bottom painter/ladder
climber/rumored to be indestructible Don had surgery on his slightly mangled
ankle today. Although neither one of us saw the doctor after the surgery,
the rest of the attending staff seemed to think everything went okey
dokey. I was with him most of the day and when I left he had just finished
dinner and was settling down for the night in the open '23-hour care' ward of
the Royal Brisbane hospital. No private rooms, private bathrooms, electric
beds, reading lights, telephones, guest chairs or TVs in this place.
Just the basics - old mechanical beds slotted right smack next to each other
(men and women alike - there's no segregation here) and lots and lots of
care. As in three nurses constantly checking in on and taking care of
Don's every need (it doesn't hurt that the nurses desk is three feet away from
the foot of Don's bed). Not tooooo bad.
Don's temporary plaster cast was replaced by a much
more fashionable 'moon boot'. It looks like a cross between a ski boot and
the bottom half of a Star Wars evil clone trooper uniform. See for
yourself in the attached picture of Don snug in his hospital bed decked out
in lavender gown and moon boot. Although it doesn't look it, Don is
actually awake and smiling in this picture.
More in a few days before we fly to Melbourne
(which, by the way, the doctor says should be no problem - very
cool).
