Below are pictures from our stay in the lagoon of
Kauehi atoll in the Tuamotus.
Picture 1 - A view of the lagoon taken from the one
and only concrete wharf. Don is finding a parking space for our car (the
dinghy) and our boat is in the background. Isn't the water color
stunning?
Picture 2 - The two boys that came to visit our
boat at anchor. Note their vessel - a surf board that seems to
have seen better days, with a couple of towels to sit on and the remains of
a snack on the back. They didn't talk to us, but did plenty of
grinning.
Picture 3 - This is the beach on the ocean side of
the atoll. Lots and lots and lots of coral piled up
everywhere.
Picture 4 - Graceful coconut palms that adorn all
the Tuamotu atolls.
Picture 5 - Some of the crew from Viva and
Wizard wading out for a tour of the pearl farm shack.
Picture 6 - Oysters ready and waiting to be
reinserted into their underwater net cage.
Picture 7 - One of the pearl farm workers inserting
a new 'starter pearl' into the oyster. Note the high tech
equipment.
Picture 8 - Petra, captain of Viva, enjoying a
drinking nut.
Picture 9 - The Man (mayor/priest/one and only
store owner/pearl farmer/ land magnate) enjoying the jelly-like premature
coconut from a drinking nut. Note the dive knife strapped to his calf and cell
phone hanging on his shorts. It never rang.
