Kepalajerih Island: our last Indonesian stop.
It wasn't picturesque. There weren't any people, the water was brown and
uninviting. To get there on October 18th was another 7 1/2 hour
hot and sweaty motor in 90+ degrees. Once there, we could
see the huge skyscrapers of Singapore through the thick haze and hear the
deafening drone of jets flying into and out of Singapore's major international
airport. Storyteller and Priscilla were there with us, and we had an
excellent dinner on board Storyteller that night, but the place left
us feeling melancholy. Indonesia's Kepalajerih Island is like
Singapore's poor cousin - positioned just close enough
to view Singapore's gleaming downtown from the bow of
an unpainted wooden seen-better-days putt-putt fishing
boat.
Our Indonesian good-bye couldn't have been more
different from the huge, boisterous, colorful, spectacular welcome we
received in the history-filled and gorgeous Banda Spice
Islands three months before. But it was ok. We were ready to
move on and our quiet last stop in Indonesia was just what we needed before
leaping (or as much of a leap as a 53 foot, cruising sailboat can make) into the
frenzy of the Singapore Strait the next day.
