22:57.057S 14:28.951E December 11, 2012 The Autohelm 6000 diligently steered us through yesterday's motor in no wind, and last night's nearly perfect downwind midnight sail. In the end, we had to work hard to slow the boat down so as to not arrive in Walvis Bay's large commercial port in complete darkness. We rounded Pelican Point, which forms the southern end of Walvis Bay, just before daylight appeared at six this morning, and dropped the anchor near the twelve or so other sailboats (mostly local) at the yacht club end of the port by seven. After tying a round fender off the stern to keep curious seals from climbing aboard, we went to bed. Four hours later and Don is already taking apart the steering mechanism. Here's hoping he can easily disassemble enough of it to determine the problem. The problem (and solution) will affect our length of stay here - hopefully it will be long enough to see a little more of Namibia, but not so long that we cross paths with the Govenor's Cup race (Cape Town to St. Helena, leaving Cape Town 12/22) or the World ARC rally (leaving Cape Town 1/3) in St. Helena. St. Helena is a small place, so we'll do our best to avoid the Governor's Cup and World ARC's arrival there. Next up: Simon's Town, Cape Town and Luderitz updates. Anne |
