We are having trouble with our satellite
phone/email link, so hopefully this entry will find its way...
We continue to have smooth sailing as we head due
south straight to St. Thomas. We expect to get there on or before
Thanksgiving if all goes well. I wonder what they serve in St. Thomas for
Thanksgiving? Rum Punch maybe?
Right now we are pretty much in the middle of
nowhere. 750 miles from the coast of Florida, 400 miles southwest of
Bermuda, 350 miles from the Bahamas and less than 500 miles north of St.
Thomas. Not surprisingly, we haven't seen another soul since we left the
coastal waters of the US. We've seen a few freighters on radar and on our
electronic chart, but have not laid eyes on anything but sky, water and each
other for close to a week. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing - it's
nice and peaceful out here. Just the other day while we were listening to
the sailing songs CD Justin from Fisher-Price gave us, we decided that the
scenery out here has not changed one bit since Columbus, Magellan and others
sailed these seas hundreds of years ago. The same can not be said for
anyplace on land.
Today (Sunday, 11/18) we've had a beautiful, smooth
sail with 15 knots of steady wind on our beam. [Non-boater translation:
the wind is perpendicular to the boat, which makes for very nice, smooth
sailing.] Tomorrow we have a 60th birthday celebration planned for
Bill. I'm sure he'll be up all night in anticipation of the party.
Hopefully it will live up to his expectations.
More tomorrow.
