We missed the official 1pm start yesterday because there was some difficulty with our exit papers.  It's strange that we have to clear out and clear in again when we arrive in the Galapagos since it's all the same country....but this is something you just don't ask questions about - it's best to just roll with the flow (or lack thereof).

We did get started about 45 minutes late and had a very nice, unexpected sail until about 9am this morning.  Now we are motorsailing due to lack of wind.  Motorsailing very, very slowly.  We are mired up in what seems to be the equatorial counter-current.  It's completely against us and quite strong at 2.5 knots in the wrong direction.  According to the research we did before taking off, we should break out of this current at some point today or tomorrow.  In the meantime, we are crawling along at 4 knots.

Our passenger Oscar is doing just fine.  A very adaptable kid.  No seasickness, no trouble sleeping, and very happy to prepare his own soy meat as well as a very delicious snack called patacones made from fried plantains for us.  Strangely enough, he is a big fan of the blues, which makes Don happy, and not so strangely, he plays guitar.  We wish he had brought it.  Then if we only had Bill Maloney back on board, we'd have a continuous blues jam session from now until we reached the Galapagos.  Oh well, since that's not possible, we've resorted to giving Oscar free reign of the Ipod.

More tomorrow -
