Here we are in Quebec City! We arrived
yesterday (Wednesday, 7/25) and will be leaving tomorrow. We've had an
excellent time here. Everyone has been very friendly and extremely
patient with our nonexistent French language skills. We are staying
at the Marina du port de Quebec, which is situated right next to the old part of
the city. The marina here is very nice and offers
internet service which makes blogging much easier. I was able to fix the
entries from last week such that the pictures are not soooooo huuuuuge.
The giant picture of our group saying 'fromage' was especially
scary.
Here is an example of the friendliness we've
encountered....
We walked to a convenience store to buy much
needed staples (beer and wine) and when we came out, a guy in a Canadian Coast
Guard truck asked if we needed a ride to the marina (we must have looked like
boaters with our sturdy canvas shopping bags and boat shoes). He
spoke enough English to get us where we needed to go and ask what our
travel plans were. A nicer guy would be tough to find.
Attached are three photos. The first is our
first view of Quebec from the river as we motored (yup, no wind
again) toward the harbor yesterday. The second photo is one of the
gates in the famous wall that surrounds the old part of Quebec City. The
third is the view we have of the old city from our boat in the marina.
Nice, huh?
The pictures really don't do the city
justice. It is one of the most beautiful cities around. It would be
nice to stay longer....but time is ticking and we have many miles to go to reach
Prince Edward Island (PEI). The distance from here to PEI
is over 400 miles, which doesn't sound like much until you think about
traveling that distance at the sailboat pace of 7 mph or
less. We plan to stop and anchor on our way to Rimouski, stop
in Rimouski, and then head out of the river and straight for PEI if the
weather looks good. If we go straight from Rimouski to PEI, it will take
us 2-3 days. It will be a good test of our ability to sail around the
clock without losing anyone overboard. We'll see.
