September 7th - another day, another motor-swelter. This
time it was only 40 miles and 7 hours though, so not too bad. We moved
west again, passing the last of Sumbawa Island's northern coast and nearly
reaching the big island of Lombok, stopping overnight at tiny Gili Lawang
on Lombok's northeastern tip. It was good we had the GPS track from a
sailboat that had entered this particular anchorage several years before to
follow because the water was silt-filled, and the reefs bordering the narrow and
complicated entrance, brown, making them almost invisible. Once
inside the calm, miniscule, mud puddle lagoon, we spent a serene night with only
one other sailboat (Dreamweaver from Australia) and a large putt-putt full of
local fishermen.
Picture 1 - Gili Lawang is not a
beautiful anchorage, but the soft light just before sunset captured
Dreamweaver perfectly on the smooth-as-glass water. Note lush Lombok
Island in the background with one of its peaks in the clouds.
